Green Terraces

Ajda Murnik  |   2020

The building stands on a sloping hillside between the old part of Stara Loka and the new part of Škofja Loka.

The aim of the project is primarily to establish a residential area and to provide a quality transitional link between the lower and upper part of the site.

The first urban planning step is to arrange the building volumes parallel to the topography. The spaces of the residential part and the public common space are arranged according to the rules established throughout the history of existing buildings.

The individual housing modules have the same construction of three-dimensional steel bars, which can be built on site and stacked on top of each other. In order to adapt to the terrain the irregularity of the stacking of the structure is necessary. Because of it, I have placed a concrete block on the back of the module, which shifts the upper structure downwards, while supporting the upper one at the same time.

Indoor private space of the flats is designed in a circular way around the atrium, followed by a semi-public portico, which acts as a spatial filter. The portico of all residential apartments is extended onto a public terrace which serves as a social space for the residents.

An important function of all terraces is social integration, physical communication, and passability which is achieved by staircases between the levels of the flats.
